From the Athene Blog — a market panorama, late 2026

THE DESKTOP JUST cracked open.

In October 2025 Microsoft walked away from hundreds of millions of Windows 10 machines — and the desktop became a market again. The numbers, briefly.

The crack

A MONOPOLY, interrupted.

Each Linux milestone arrives faster than the last.

Desktop Linux, share of worldwide web traffic, 2019–2026. StatCounter Global Stats, identified desktop systems; the 2019 figure is the yearly average, the rest are milestone months (4% was first crossed in February 2024; 4.45% is the July 2024 peak). Web measurement tracks activity, not installed machines — method note below.

Linux since 2019 — from 1.58% to 5.63%. Eight years from 1% to 2%, two years to 3%, then eight months to 4%.
≈ macOS
On several 2026 readings Linux runs level with StatCounter's macOS row (Oct 2026: 5.63% vs 5.81%); Apple's separate, older “OS X” row is not counted.

The dark matter.

StatCounter's Unknown traffic — privacy-hardened browsers that hide their OS — reached 21.5% of desktop pageviews in June 2026, and privacy-conscious users skew Linux. StatCounter has since folded that category back in and revised its series — the visible share is a floor, not a ceiling.

Where

WHERE LINUX lives.

Volume in India; purchasing power in North America and Europe.

Linux share of desktop web traffic, five readings. StatCounter Global Stats, read on 2 Nov 2026 (StatCounter revised its mid-2026 series downwards in autumn). Each bar is that region's own Linux share — five separate populations, so they do not add up to a whole.

The whole: desktop operating systems, worldwide, Oct 2026. StatCounter; Apple = its “macOS” (5.81%) and older “OS X” (9.86%) rows together; the rest below 0.1%.

India brings scale and word-of-mouth momentum. North America read double digits in July 2026 (10.65%, before StatCounter's autumn revision), and carries the highest willingness to pay. Europe adds what no one else has: a political demand for digital sovereignty — home-field advantage for a European, local-first product.

Who

WHO THE USERS are.

Trust

THE TRUST gap.

Everyone uses AI. Almost nobody trusts where it sends their work.

use or plan to use AI tools — adoption keeps rising.

trust AI accuracy; only 3% highly, 46% actively distrust.

60% ↓72%

favorability — falling as hands-on experience grows.

They are not rejecting intelligence — they are rejecting the cloud-bound black box. The vacuum belongs to tools whose every byte stays on hardware the user owns.

Money

WHAT THE MARKET IS worth.

A niche by percentage, a serious economy by revenue.

The opening

NO NATIVE NOTEBOOK — until now.

OneNote never shipped a native Linux client; every migrant leaves their notebook at the border. Compendium Note takes the default's path: permanently free, GPL-licensed, native — with the Android Companion in the pocket.

I.The migrants

Windows 10 leavers and OneNote orphans with a notebook-shaped hole in their day.

II.The architects

Senior engineers and researchers, 30–50, full tool autonomy.

III.The institutions

European bodies whose sovereignty rules exclude US cloud notebooks.

Thirty years to build, one deadline to crack. We are on the other side, holding the notebook.

A note on method, because honesty is the product: web statistics measure activity, not installed machines; StatCounter revised parts of its mid-2026 series downwards in autumn 2026, and this page follows the revised pages. Where estimates diverge, this page quotes the range, and every figure carries its month. The page sets no cookies and runs no tracking — itself a small act of calm technology.
